Peter McSweeney, MB Ch.B is a Member Physician at the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute and part of the Lymphoid, Transplant, Autoimmune, and Long-term follow-up Groups. He is Director of Cellular Therapy at CBCI. Dr. McSweeney joined the Rocky Mountain Blood and Marrow Transplant Program in 2004. Dr. McSweeney is board certified in internal medicine in USA and hematology and hematopathology from New Zealand.

Dr. McSweeney is from New Zealand. He earned his medical degree at the University of Otago Medical School in Dunedin, New Zealand. He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowships in oncology/hematology and clinical hematology and hematopathology at Wellington Public Hospital in New Zealand under the direction of the Australasian Colleges of Medicine and Pathology.

Dr. McSweeney came to the United States in 1989 completing his New Zealand fellowships in clinical hematology, hematopathology and oncology while at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) in Seattle, Washington. Dr. McSweeney worked as an attending physician and researcher at the FHCRC for nine years. During this time, he became an assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine and an assistant member at FHCRC. While at FHCRC he was involved in designing early clinical trials of reduced intensity allogeneic transplants and transplants for autoimmune disease. In 1999 he joined the University of Colorado Blood and Marrow Transplant program as Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Allogeneic Transplant. In 2004 he joined the Rocky Mountain Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and helped found CBCI in 2010. Dr. McSweeney has been published numerous times and was elected to the Board of ASBMT as Community Director for 2010-13. He was been an invited speaker for ASH education sessions in 1999 and 2001.

Dr. McSweeney has extensive experience and expertise in all forms of HCT and recently has directed research and clinical focus to helping develop the CAR-T cell program at CBCI. His current interests are in focusing on allogeneic transplantation, lymphoma and CAR T cell therapies for lymphoid malignancies.

Dr. McSweeney’s enjoys spending time with his family, golf, regular exercise, following the New Zealand All Blacks, and politics.
